Position Description:

We are looking for a motivated, talented individual interested in a manufacturing leadership role with significant growth opportunity to join our organization as a Director of Communications, Americas in Perrysburg, Ohio.

JOB SUMMARY

This position is integral to driving and sustaining O-I’s business goals to ensure maximum performance and engagement through world-class communication leadership. This role is responsible for all internal and external communications for the North America and Latin America regions of the company, providing leadership to a team of global communication professionals. Working as part of the Enterprise Communications Team as well as the Regional Leadership Team, this position will enable cultural transformation, enhanced corporate reputation, and improved employee advocacy.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Establish and manage a strategic communication planning process that ensures message alignment, simplicity, and consistency, and results in the adoption of a new set of cultural behaviors internally, and renewed confidence and trust among external stakeholders.

  • Serve as a champion for change and cultural transformation, applying smart communication strategies and change management principles to enable speed and effectiveness within the organization.

  • Enhance and/or improve the regions’ reputation externally with key stakeholders by working collaboratively with public affairs, marketing communications, investor relations, community relations, etc., to ensure limited resources are maximized.

  • Coach and counsel the regions’ senior leadership team on all communication matters, pushing for relevant, simple, transparent, candid and proactive communications.

  • Develop and deploy relevant PR, media relations and thought leadership activities as appropriate within the region, serving as a key external spokesperson as required.

  • Take the lead on global/enterprise initiatives as required to leverage the team’s talents and capabilities.

  • Establish and manage various communication tools, ensuring the appropriate mix of channels and content based on audience.

  • Provide communication expertise, counsel, and support for major change initiatives and transactions, including acquisitions, divestitures, reorganizations, policy changes and labor relations.

  • Improve the communication skills of leaders by providing training and tools that facilitate multi-directional communication.

  • Establish communication standards of excellence, identifying communication-related gaps and barriers to performance. Serve as an expert in written, verbal and electronic communication.

  • Develop communication-related performance targets and quantifiably measure progress.

  • Identify and secure all necessary internal and external resources (agency or freelance support) to execute communication initiatives with excellence.

  • Actively participate as a member of the global communications team as well as an active leader of change at the regional level working closely with the Regional Leadership Team.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Demonstrates the ability to gather and understand employee insights and motivations, and tailors communication effectively to create impact

  • Proven project management experience and results

  • Strong enrolling and influencing skills and executive presence

  • Knowledge of and experience in change management, communication measurement and communication process improvement

  • Shapes function and broader organization to focus on outcome-based communications

  • Financial acumen

  • Fluency in Spanish and/or Portuguese a plus

SCOPE AND IMPACT

Scope includes all executive and employee communication, media relations, crisis communications and issues management.

Position Requirements:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree required in Journalism/Communication; MBA or MA in Journalism or Communications a plus

  • 10+ years of corporate communication or agency experience.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

This role will report to the VP of Global and Corporate Communications with a dotted line reporting the relationship to the VPs’ of Strategy & Integration within each region. The Director of Communications will have country level communication employees as direct and indirect reports.

25%-30%
