Position Description:

We are currently seeking a Auto Control Furnace Operator to join our team at our plant in Winston-Salem, NC.

PRIMARY FUNCTION

Performs duties in connection with controlling, monitoring, adjusting, batch handling and mixing equipment and automatic furnace control equipment, cullet handling. Fires furnace using gas and propane. Adjusts electric boosting.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

MCS, DEC, SPC computers, batch mixing and weighing equipment, feeders, gloves and protective gear, broom, shovel, furnaces, small scales, microscope, micrometer, color spectrometer, density comparator, EP stack inverter, bob cats, cooling and combustion blower and optical gun,tractor, payloader, sledge hammer.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  1. Controls chargers that automatically charge furnace with raw batch.

  2. Maintains glass levels and temperatures in all furnaces.

  3. Checks level visually, as well as checks operation of automatic level gauge.

  4. Reverses fires and air valves whenever automatic system malfunctions or is inoperative.

  5. Checks furnaces to determine faulty operation conditions such as hot spots, dirty burners, clogged checkers, and furnace leaks.

Takes measures to temporarily correct these conditions; notifies supervision of conditions.

  1. Gathers glass samples from lehrs, checks density, color, seed and blister count, stone identification, glass thickness. Inputs all SPC

data into SPC data base.

  1. Makes changes to correct any defective conditions found and, when necessary, notifies supervision of conditions.

  2. Keeps log of Batch and Furnace operation, noting required statistics in log book or log sheets.

  3. Changes recording forms on instruments.

  4. Cleans burners and changes burners and tips as necessary.

  5. Enters loading numbers into Quality Assurance Unloading System using computer.

  6. Checks batch house controls and answers alarms (dealing with wrong weights on scales, gates sticking); corrects malfunctions or

reports malfunctions to supervisor or maintenance personnel.

  1. Assists shift mechanics in major repairs.

  2. Makes minor adjustments and repairs as required, such as unplugging cullet gates, pipes, cullet diverter, sand bin, transfer boxes

that may require riding man-lift or elevator.

  1. As directed, sets scales for proper weighing.

  2. Checks water jacket cooling water.

  3. Cleans batch chargers to maintain good charging. Cleans out burner block peepholes.

  4. Assists other department employees as time permits; attends emergency situations such as power failure, emergency glass leaks.

  5. As required, operates mixing system on manual basis; weighs colorizer and decolorizers, using small hand scales; checks and

adjusts frit feed and stirrer in colorant forehearth.

20 Checks brick wall refractory using optical gun.

  1. Check EP stack inverter if properly operating in collecting particles from air through electro probes and automatically delivered

to Batch & Furnace bins.

  1. Hauls cullet from Basement or other plant locations to yard storage. May operate bob cat to scoop batch materials or cullet when

necessary. May use sledge hammer to crush big blocks of molten glass in pits to strain.

  1. Hauls and loads purchased, yard, processed and basement cullet to cullet crusher or to storage area or inventory bins.

  2. Cleans up control rooms, empties all trash cans and performs good housekeeping practices in the Batch House.

Position Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working in manufacturing or production preferred.

  • At least 18 years of age.

  • High School Graduate or GED.

  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate using English language

  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs. on a regular basis.

  • Must be able to work a rotating schedule, with weekend and holiday requirements.

Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.
